Planetary Visions regularly provides satellite images for Panorama, the BBC's flagship current affairs programme. Homs: Journey into Hell (BBC1 8:30pm 12th March 2012) documents the recent uprising in the Syrian city of Homs. Reports from the city are backed up with detailed satellite images showing the battered district of Baba Amr.
Working with visual effects designer Morgan Sendall, Planetary Visions researched and processed imagery from NASA's EO-1 satellite and DigitalGlobe's QuickBird, and sourced analysed images from the US State Department and the campaign group Human Rights Watch. Visible and infrared channels were combined to enhance the EO-1 overview image, minimising the effects of atmospheric haze. High resolution images were detailed enough to show individual shell craters, damaged buildings, military vehicles and a burning oil pipeline.
Our previous work for Panorama has included programmes on the death of Osama Bin Laden, the Fukushima nuclear plant, and conflicts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Gaza and Darfur.
