Although this nebula looks similar to a planetary nebula, it is in fact a region of excited nebulosity surrounding a triple star system. The bright blue star in the centre is the brightest star of the triplet, HD 148937, and is losing mass from its outer layers. An occasional outburst from the star generates symmetrical shells. The shells are referred to as NGC 6164 and NGC 6165.
