The Rosette Nebula is a vast cloud of dust and gas - so large, its different parts have been assigned different NGC numbers, 2237, 2238, 2239, and 2246. Embedded within the nebula can be seen the open star cluster NGC 2244, consisting of stars that have been formed from the nebula's material. Light from the hot young stars strikes the nebula and cause it to shine.
