This wide-field image shows the dark shape of the Cone Nebula, extensive surrounding regions of ionised hydrogen, and the stars of the open cluster NGC 2264. The brightest blue star in the image is S Monocerotis. The brighter stars are surrounded by blue reflection nebulae. The Cone Nebula is visible due to its obscuration of light from the open cluster NGC 2264 which lies behind it.
