The star just south of NGC 1499 is Zeta Persei, Menkib, a white supergiant which shines over 6,300 times brighter than our own Sun. It is probably this star, a member of an association of bright stars known as the Perseus OB2 association, that is responsible for illuminating NGC 1499.
